History
The Times Square New Year's Eve Ball is a tradition that began in 1907. The fist ball was made of wood and iron and lit with 25-watt bulbs. It was built by metalworker Jacob Starr. The only years the ball was not lowered were in 1942 and 1943, during wartime. Between 2000 and 2007, the Times Square New Year's Eve ball was designed by Waterford Crystal. In 2008, a new ball was created using both Waterford Crystals and LED lights that made a kaleidoscope effect.
