The television drama NCIS follows the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as they investigate crimes regarding U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines personnel. The show stars Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Sean Murray, Cote De Pablo and Pauley Perrette and airs Tuesday nights on CBS.

The show was based off the long-running drama show JAG, with well-known executive producer Donald Bellisario creating the show in 2003. The series originally featured actress Sasha Alexander as the fourth member of the team, however her character, Kate Todd, was murdered at the end of season two. Her killer, Ari Haswari was later killed by his sister, Ziva David (played by Cote de Pablo), who joined the NCIS team in her place. Similarly, actress Lauren Holly portrayed Jenny Shepard, the director of NCIS in seasons three through five. Shepard's character was murdered at the end of season five. Rocky Carroll joined the show in season five as Leon Vance, the new director of the agency.

Other characters include agents Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, and Timothy McGee, portrayed by Sean Murray. Pauley Perrette is featured as forensics specialist Abby Sciuto, while David McCallum portrays medical examiner Dr. Donald Mallard, also known by the nickname "Ducky."

In 2009, the show produced a spinoff, NCIS Los Angeles, which airs in the hour following NCIS on Tuesday nights. The new show features Chris O'Donnell, Peter Cambor, Daniela Ruah, Adam Jamal Craig, Barrett Foa, Linda Hunt and LL Cool J, who operate the Los Angeles NCIS offices. The shows have crossed over several times during the first season of the spin-off, including appearances by Pauly Perrette and Rocky Carroll.
