The state of Washington awarded its 11 electoral votes to Democratic nominee Barack Obama, helping to elect him as the 44th President of the United States. Barack Obama held a steady lead over Republican John McCain in the months prior to the 2008 presidential election in the state. Christine Gregoire, the incumbent Governor, won her re-election campaign against challenger Dino Rossi.
