Washington DC Restaurants

  • One of the main staples in Washington DC is Ethiopian cuisine, and includes a spicy stewed and sautéed meats and vegetables mixture, served atop a plate covered with a spongy bread.
  • Fine Dining

For a true fine dining experience, visit the 1789 restaurant. Executive chef Ris Lacoste has won many awards for his food there, including "Restaurant of the Year." Enjoy specialty dishes like the oyster and champagne stew with Smithfield ham and walnuts, or the roast rack of Colorado lamb with creamy feta potatoes au gratin in red-pepper-purée-infused Merlot sauce. For dessert, enjoy a hot fudge sundae, bread pudding or the crème brûlée.
  • Moderate Dining

At Zola Restaurant, Chef Frank Morales wins diners over with his "straight ahead American" cuisine. Menu items like simple ham and gouda sandwiches at lunch, to delicately roasted sea scallops with creamy parsnip puree, preceded by an artichoke and goat cheese tart at dinner. Or try the rich sweet-corn-and-mussel chowder with apple wood–smoked bacon, and grilled rib-eye steak with horseradish fritters in a Grand Marnier cream sauce. Save room for one of pastry Chef Josh Short's delicious desserts, like his trio of butterscotch puddings, each incorporating a different single-malt Scotch whiskey into the custard.
  • Affordable Dining

Ben's Chili Bowl is a mom-and-pop restaurant that opened in 1958. They won the James Beard Foundation Award as an "American Classic" in 2004. Like the title of the restaurant says, Chili is very popular here, you can get chili on hot dogs, sausages, burgers, even on fries. Of course, you could just try a plain bowl of it.
