The Washington Capitals play in the Southeast Division of the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference.
Early Years
Part of the six team NHL expansion, the Capitals joined the league in 1974. In their first season in the NHL the Capitals set several records. Their 39 road losses, 17 consecutive losses and .131 win percentage are still NHL existing records, amounting to one of the statistically worst seasons in the history of the NHL.
Finally Some Success
Following the 1982 draft of defenseman Scott Stevens, the Capitals entered the playoff for the first time in their history in 1983. They however quickly lost in the first round to the New York Islanders. They continued to make the playoffs the following 13 seasons, losing in either the first or second round.
1997-98 Cup Run
After failing to reach the post season in 1997, the Capitals came back stronger in the 1997-1998 season, finishing with a 40-30-12 regular season record. They defeated the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, and Buffalo Sabres to reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time ever. Their championship hopes were quickly diminished as they were swept in four games by the Detroit Red Wings.
