  • A washing machine is a common household appliance that automatically washes laundry. It can be either top loading or front loading.
  • History

In ancient times people would wash their clothing by beating them on rocks in the river. Later on the washboard was invented. Over time people found many different techniques of beating the clothing to remove the dirt. The first U.S. washing machine patent was in 1797. The first electric washing machine on market in 1906.
  • Buying Guide

Front loading machines are more energy efficient and do a better job of washing and spinning out the moisture from laundry. Their downfall is the cost; they are more expensive than top loading machines.

As for noise level, top loading machines make sound throughout the wash cycle but front loading machines have a lot of vibration and during the spin cycle. Some washing machines provide an on or off for the end of the wash cycle alarm, this can be a nice feature to have if you do a load overnight.

Most machines come with a lot of features including automatic dispensers for bleach and fabric softener, automatic temperature control, and a variety of wash cycles.

Always check warranty information and energy efficiency, this will save you money in the long run. Look for the energy star logo.
