  • History

Warner Music Group was founded as a subdivision of Time Warner in 1958, in addition to the Warner Bros. movie studio. In 1987, Warner Communications merged with Time, Inc to form Time Warner, which at this time still owned the rights to Warner Music Group. Although, it was not officially called Warner Music Group until several years after. In 2003, the company sold Warner Music Group to a group of investors, but the deal wasn't fully completed until early 2004. WMG then hired Lyor Cohen from Universal Music Group to help lower the costs of producing music. Then on May 5, 2006 they rejected a buyout offer from EMI Group and two years after EMI Group started losing money so WMG offered to buy them out, but they refused.
