This is Part 9 of our complete Lord of the Rings Conquest Walkthrough, featuring War of the Ring Storming the Black Gate.
Conquest Campaign
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest features two campaigns in its single-player mode. One focuses on the Armies of the West and follows the major events of the Lord of the Rings films. During this campaign, players get the chance to control many of the major protagonists from The Lord of the Rings, including Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas. The other campaign focuses on the armies of Mordor in a hypothetical scenario in which The One Ring was never destroyed and Sauron never defeated. In this campaign, players can embody the evil wizard Saruman and even Sauron himself. The campaign mode can be played co-operatively with another person on a split screen and takes approximately ten hours to complete.GameSpot: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Impressions (July 15, 2008)-
Objective 1: Defend Your Position
- At the start of this level, you'll have your pick of heroes. Select Gandalf.
- The strategy here will be similar to the one you used in Minas Tirith. Charge up your lightning, and fire at the Orcs when they open the gate. Follow up with a firewall, then run toward the remaining enemies and clear them out with a shockwave.
- Heal your mates and use lightning until your magic recharges. Use these powers again to defeat the rest of the first wave.
- When the second wave approaches, wait until they pile up at the gate. Use a shockwave first. This should kill most of the mages who can block your other magic while giving your allies the upper hand.
- Four trolls will appear before long. Keep your distance and concentrate on one at a time. Hit them with lightning and firewalls, and use your shockwave to kill any nearby enemies.
- Hold this area for just a few more moments to complete the objective.
Objective 2: Capture the Gate
- Press forward with your fellow troops. They should take care of most of the enemy, but you can help with firewalls and shockwaves.
- When you reach the capture point, stand on the far left side of the ring to avoid swooping fell beasts.
- Look to your left. There's a tower with a few pesky Orc archers. They don't pose much of a threat, but you can get them out of your hair with lightning.
Objective 3: Kill the Orc Captains
- At the center of the capture point, press RB and switch to Legolas.
- There are four towers ahead, each holding an Orc Captain that must be killed. Zoom in on each one by pressing LT, then fire regular arrows at their heads to defeat them. Note: You should avoid using fire arrows here, as they will burn the towers and give the captains a little more mobility.
- If you're running low on health, stay near one of your mages, and they will use magic to heal you. Try to kill the captains without venturing too far into the battlefield.
Objective 4: Kill the Mouth of Sauron
- The Mouth of Sauron is a lieutenant to the head honcho, and he's vulnerable to Gandalf's lightning, shockwaves and firewalls. Retreat to the control point and switch to Gandalf before continuing the fight.
- Keep your distance from the Mouth of Sauron as you hit him with the three previously mentioned attacks. Try to keep your surrounding allies healthy by pressing LB to heal them, as they can fend off the surrounding Orcs.
Objective 5: Capture the Camp
- Retreat once more to the capture point and switch to Aragorn.
- Approach the enemy camp marked by the yellow arrow. The key to success here is a combination of regular attacks to charge your special power, then CrowdBreakers to defeat the hordes of enemies.
- Target one of the higher-level enemies, such as an Orc Warrior, and use the combo X, X, X, Y, Y, B. Finish the enemy off if this hadn't defeated it. You should now have enough special power to use a CrowdBreakaer. Hold LT and press B to unleash a whirlwind attack on the surrounding enemies.
- Keep this up until you've killed enough enemies to capture the camp.
Objective 6: Hold This Area
- Frodo must now destroy the ring once and for all. Switch to Gandalf at this capture point to hold down your current position.
- Things go pretty smoothly here until the Trolls show up. Use lightning and firewalls to defeat them, one at a time as you did earlier in the level.
- After you kill the first two trolls, get to the edges of the camp. A siege strike of fell beasts will arrive, and standing away from the middle area will keep you safe. This only happens once, so feel free to move around once the strike is over.
- Keep pounding the Trolls. If there are too many Orcs nearby, use a shockwave to take care of them.
- Let the timer at the top of the screen run down to complete this mission, as well as the "Good" campaign. You'll earn the "All's Well That Ends Better" Achievement and unlock the Rise of Sauron campaign.
