This is Part 3 of our complete Lord of the Rings Conquest Walkthrough, featuring War of the Ring Isengard.
Conquest Campaign
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest features two campaigns in its single-player mode. One focuses on the Armies of the West and follows the major events of the Lord of the Rings films. During this campaign, players get the chance to control many of the major protagonists from The Lord of the Rings, including Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas. The other campaign focuses on the armies of Mordor in a hypothetical scenario in which The One Ring was never destroyed and Sauron never defeated. In this campaign, players can embody the evil wizard Saruman and even Sauron himself. The campaign mode can be played co-operatively with another person on a split screen and takes approximately ten hours to complete.GameSpot: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Impressions (July 15, 2008)-
Objective 1: Capture Entrance to the Pits
- The battle continues with the March of the Ents at Isengard.
- Choose the Mage for this level. The majority of your allies will attack a large pile to the right. First, you should help your friends on the left by striking the smaller group of enemies with lighting.
- Keep moving ahead to the capture point. Help your friends along the way by knocking the enemy off their feet with a Y attack. Heal any allies that have green health icons above their heads by pressing LB when near them, then finish off the enemy with regular X attacks.
- Keep pressing forward to the capture point. When you get there, toss a firewall at the enemies coming from ahead by pressing B. Use lighting to kill the remaining foes and heal your allies if they need it.
-
Objective 2: Kill the Uruk-Hai Captain
- Make sure your allies aren't tied up with any remaining enemies, then head down into the pits, where the captain awaits.
- HINT: The Mage is best at fighting from medium range, so keep your distance when attacking the captain. The first thing to do is hit him with a firewall.
- This powerful attack has recharge after use. Spend this time healing your allies and using lighting to clear out large piles of enemies. When enemies are standing near each other, the lightning spreads between them, scoring maximum damage.
- Keep using firewalls when possible. A few of them should fell the captain.
-
-
Objective 3: Destroy the Fire Machine
- From the platform where you encountered the captain, look for the post where you can switch characters -- it has a blue flag hanging on top. Switch to the Archer.
- The Fire Machine is a large object on a central platform below, and the Archer can hit it with fire arrows. Press B to load one up, then RT to fire it at the machine. It will set on fire, causing damage.
- While your fire arrow is recharging, look for enemies on the lower platforms to shoot with regular arrows. You'll want to target the Orc Archers first. Once the fire arrow is recharged, hit the Fire Machine again.
- Eventually, a swarm of enemies will come to your platform. Load up a poison arrow with Y and shoot it into the crowd, then follow up with a multi-arrow by pressing LB.
- Keep hurling fire arrows at the Fire Machine -- roughly five shots should do the trick.
-
Objective 4: Kill Wormtongue
- Head down to the destroyed machine and defeat any nearby enemies. Eventually, Wormtongue will descend down to the platform on which you're standing. Keep your distance and start pelting him with arrows.
- If you have a clear shot, load up a flaming arrow by pressing B and fire it at Wormtongue.
- Do the same with a poison arrow by loading it up with Y.
- Eventually, Wormtongue will turn invisible, but you can still tell where he is by the giant yellow arrow above him. Keep firing arrows in this general direction until he is defeated. Grab the key that he drops.
-
Objective 5: Take the Key to Treebeard
- Running up the ramp leading to Treebeard is no easy task. Let your comrades take the lead, and back them up by shooting arrows.
- HINT: Pay particular attention to the Orc Archers. They can hit you from far away, so take them out first as long as there aren't any more immediate threats nearby.
- Once the enemy crowd is thinned, make a dash up the ramp. You'll have to let your buddies do the rest of the fighting.
- Treebeard is at the top of the ramp. Simply run up to him to deliver the key.
-
Objective 6: Take Control of a Dormant Ent
- This one's easy. Just run up to any of the Ents marked with yellow arrows and press RB to control it.
Objective 8: Capture the Doors of Orthanc
- There's a circular control point beyond the towers. Walk over with your Ent to begin capturing it.
- The biggest threat here are mages and enemies with torches. Knock them down or throw them before they can deplete too much of your health. Enemies aren't in great numbers here, so once you've eliminated the more dangerous ones, capturing should be easy.
Objective 9: Kill Saruman
- At the start of this objective, you'll be asked if you want to play as a hero. Hit left on the D-Pad to select "Yes," and you will become Gandalf. His controls are similar to that of a Mage.
- Head into the tower. Your first battle is against an Orc Captain. Start off with conventional attacks by pressing X.
- Knock the captain down by pressing Y when close. Then hit him with a firewall by pressing B when he gets up. Finish him off with another conventional attack, then keep moving up the stairs.
- Saruman waits at the top floor. His attacks include fire and lighting, which are best dodged by constantly moving left and right. This tactic of "strafing" can be accomplished by pressing left and right on the left thumbstick.
- Don't initiate any attacks against Saruman when he is blocking, as noted by the blue aura around him.
- Once his defenses are down, close in and press Y to knock him down. Follow up with a firewall as he gets up.
- Use lighting attacks to hit Saruman while your other magic is recharging. Remember to stay moving to dodge his offenses.
- Repeat this cycle until Saruman is defeated. This completes the second level and gives you the "Conquer over Isengard" Achievement.
