    Rodriguez began his career with the Astros Dominican Academy, signing as an undrafted amateur free agent with the Astros on January 12, 1999. He came to the United States in 2001, joining the Astros minor league affiliates for his first few years. In 2004 he played for the Águilas Cibaeñas team of the Dominican Republic Baseball league, helping the team win the championship.

    Rodriguez was called up to make his MLB debut with the Astros on May 23, 2005. He played a total of 25 games his rookie season with the Astros, winning ten of those games. Rodriguez saw slightly more playing time in the 2006 season, playing in 30 games, pitching 135 innings. His playing time increased again in the 2007 season, pitching in 182 innings, over 31 games.
