Koenig's most famous role was undoubtedly as Pavel Chekov, the Russian starfleet officer who was the navigator in the original Star Trek TV series and seven associated films. Many people thought Koenig was himself Russian, but Koenig was asked by Gene Roddenberry to ham up a Russian accent especially for the series. Koenig was originally cast for the role of Chekov in 1966 due to his resemblance to Davy Jones of the Monkees. Roddenberry wanted to attract younger girls to the Star Trek audience.
Koenig was also well known for his role as the bad guy "Bester" on Babylon 5, the television series. Koenig played this role in 12 episodes from 1994 through to 1998.
Walter Koenig's most recent work was acting in War of Heaven a 2010 Short Sci-Fi War, Action filled Drama, in which he plays the role of Lee.
Koenig has famous siblings. Andrew Koenig played the role of "Boner" in Growing Pains from 1985 - 1989. Daughter, Danielle Koenig is a well known Comedian who is married to the even more widely known Jimmy Pardo. Koenig has one grandchild from this relationship.

On his official website, Walter Koenig has asked for the following message to be posted. "Andrew Koenig, the son of Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, is missing. The last time Andrew Koenig was seen was on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Andrew Koenig never boarded his flight back to the US, and he hasn't heard from since then. He was last seen at a bakery in the Stanley Park area of Vancouver. Andrew Koenig, 41, was working as a camera operator on the show "Never Not Funny" as well as doing improv in Los Angeles. Best known as "Boner" from "Growing Pains", Andrew also had a role in "Deep Space Nine", and is a talented actor director, editor and photographer as well as a passionate activist. In 2008, he was arrested at the Rose Bowl while protesting China's part in the genocide in the country of Burma. This is a serious matter that has Koenig's friends and family gravely concerned.
