Walmart Sues Disabled Woman

  • After originally paying over $400,000 in medical expenses to former Wal-Mart employee Deborah Shank (who had been permanently injured in a car accident in May of 2000), the retailer then sued the woman to recoup that money after she was awarded a separate judgement in a personal injury suit. A federal court of appeals sided with Wal-Mart in the case. After numerous appeals, the U.S. Supreme court refused to take up the case.
  • Update:

    On April 1, 2008, Walmart released a statement saying that they would no longer be pursuing its case against Shank and that it was looking into "modifying its health care plan to allow more discretion in individual cases."
