    Wake Forest University was founded in 1834 in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The original purpose of the institution was to provide education for Christian layman and ministers. During the Civil War in 1862 the college closed temporarily, but would re-open again in 1866. In 1956, the campus moved to its current home of Winston-Salem.WFU.edu: Wake Forrest History
