Wag the Dog

  • Wag the Dog is a 1998 political satire in which a Hollywood producer is hired to orchestrate a fake war with Albania in order to distract from a presidential sex scandal. The film stars Robert De Niro as a political operative and Dustin Hoffman as a Hollywood producer. It was co-written by playwright David Mamet and Romeo Is Bleeding writer Hilary Henkin.
  • Life Imitating Art?

Just weeks after Wag the Dog's January, 1998, release, the Monica Lewinsky scandal engulfed the Clinton White House. Subsequently, the administration launched military offensives in Iraq and Yugoslavia that were perceived in some quarters as an attempt to divert attention from the scandal.
