Wade Edwards, the eldest son of former Senator John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth, died in a car accident in 1996. Wade Edwards was sixteen years old when the Jeep he was driving was overturned by a gust of wind on a highway near the family's home in South Carolina.
Inspiration
Shortly after their son's death, John and Elizabeth Edwards founded the Wade Edwards Foundation, whose foremost project is the Wade Edwards Learning Lab (WELL). WELL is a free after-school learning center and computer lab located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Wade Edward's death also cemented his father's decision to enter politics, a topic that John Edwards had often discussed with his son.
