The Western Athletic Conference was formed with six charter members in 1962. Though none of the original members are still in the conference, the league continues to thrive under a multitude of changes through the years. The league has endured two different eras of expansion and defection, and today currently has nine member programs.

From Sweet Sixteen to Number Nine
In 1996, the league expanded to 16 teams. Three clubs came into the league from the Southwest Conference, two were added from the Big West Conference and one from the Missouri Valley Conference. However, eight of the schools thought they had increased the league too much, making it potentially a diluted product, so they bolted the league to form the Mountain West Conference.
