  • The Alvarez Era

Serving over a quarter-century as head coach, Barry Alvarez took the Badgers from perennial cellar-dwellers to annual Big Ten title competitors. He won three conference titles, three Rose Bowls and finished in the top ten nationally three times as well. Alvarez is the program's winningest coach and holds the best winning percentage of any Division I coach in bowl games. He stepped aside as the Badgers' football coach in 2006, but retained his position as the university's athletic director.
