  • NFL Career

    Walter Payton began his NFL career after being drafted by the Bears in 1975. After a sub-par rookie season, Payton rushed for over 1,300 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in his second season. He was elected to his first Pro Bowl and was named MVP of the game. The next season, Payton won the league MVP award after rushing for over 1,800 yards and 16 total touchdowns.     After retiring at the conclusion of the 1987 season, Payton's jersey number was retired by the Bears. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993. Walter Payton died on November 1, 1999 after battling a rare liver disease.
