  • History:

The first inkling of a vacuum cleaner was invented by Ives W. McGaffney in 1869. He called his invention the "Whirlwind" and it was a manual hand crank mechanism to produce suction and had no brush roller. Melville Bissell, in 1876, is largely credited with the major invention of what we know today as a vacuum cleaner.

Hubert Cecil Booth patented the first powered vacuum cleaner in 1901 and started the British Vacuum cleaner company.

Hoover soon followed in 1908 with their Model O vacuum cleaner. This machine had a cloth bag filter and a variety of attachments.
