  • Brief History

The United Arab Emirates originated out of a series of autonomous regions controlled by a single leader. Though they were initially hostile to European influence, the sheikdoms eventually signed treaties in 1853 and 1892 which established close ties with the United Kingdom. In 1971, six of the current states formally established the United Arab Emirates, while the final member Ras al-Khaimah joined soon after in 1972.
