From Concept to Screen
Originally pitched to ABC as Northwest Passage, Lynch and Frost filmed the pilot episode for $1.8 million. They also shot an original ending for the pilot so that it could be released to video as a film if the network decided not to pick up the show. The show did get picked up, however, and became a cultural phenomenon in 1990 as audiences were gripped by the mystery of who killed Laura Palmer. Once the killer was revealed in the middle of the second season, viewership declined, and the season two finale remained as the final episode. A prequel film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was released in 1992.
The Black Lodge
Perhaps one of the most famous scenes of Lynch's directorial career, and an enigmatic moment from Twin Peaks, is the "red room" sequence at the end of episode two. It depicts a dream in which a dwarf tells Agent Cooper the identity of Palmer's murderer in garbled language. The sequence appears in several variations throughout the series and subsequent film.Categories
