In Istanbul, Turkey, a riot broke out between Kurdish protesters and police on Saturday March 22, 2008 during Newroz, a Kurdish spring festival. The Kurdish protesters reportedly threw rocks at Turkish police and chanting slogans that praised the imprisoned leader of the nationalist organization, PKK (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan, or Kurdish Workers' Party). Officials used tear gas to break up the crowd. Sixty-five people including police officers have been reported injured.
