Legacy/Aftermath
The Battle of Gettysburg is often considered to be the turning point of the Civil War. Robert E. Lee was on a march North into Pennsylvania when Union and Confederate armies clashed in Gettysburg. After a day of disorganization from both sides, July 2nd brought an offensive from Lee against a Union defensive line that held strong. The final day saw Pickett's Charge, an unsuccessful offensive that led to Lee's eventual retreat and ended his Northern invasion. On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered the historic Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery. Gettysburg Battlefield is now a national park.
