• Storyline

  Reese Witherspoon plays the upcoming fashion designer Melanie Smooter. Melanie is dating the son of the mayor of New York City, Andrew Hennings, played by Patrick Dempsey. Everything is going well for Melanie until Andrew proposes to her and she realizes that she is still technically married to someone else. Melanie returns to Alabama for the first time in seven years to ask her estranged husband Jake, played by Josh Lucas, for a divorce. The process is not as easy as she anticipates as Jake refuses to sign the divorce papers and a trouble with the law forces her to call her parents, whom she is estranged from as well. Melanie realizes although she loves New York, her roots are still back in that small Alabama town and is forced to decide between the two lifestyles.
