In mid-June 2009, it was reported that Jobs, who took a medical leave of absence in January 2009, had received a liver transplant in the spring of 2009. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Jobs received the transplant in a Tennessee hospital. On January 14, 2009, Jobs wrote a letter to Apple employees announcing that he'd "decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June" and that his "health-related issues" were "more complex" than he originally thought. Jobs was born in San Francisco, California, and was adopted as an infant. He grew up just south of his birthplace in Cupertino, California.
