The 2009 Grammy Award nominees for Song of the Year were announced December 3, 2008, during a special concert that aired on CBS. Coldplay members Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin won the award for the song "Viva La Vida" when the Grammys were awarded at L.A.'s Staples Center on February 8, 2009.
Song of the Year is one of the four most prestigious awards of the Grammys. The award goes to the composers of the song rather than the artist (Coldplay writes their own material).
