  Prior to playing professionally, Phillips played college football with the Purdue Boilermakers in the NCAA. Starting in 49-consecutive games, Phillips recorded 231 tackles, 60.5 tackles for a loss, 33.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles, setting a school record for quarterback sacks.
