First joined the UN in 1969 while studying at the University of Paris, he became the High Commissioner for Refugees and overlooked humanitarian missions in places like Bangladesh and Peru. de Mello served in many posts and in 2003, Kofi Annan asked him to represent the UN in Iraq, less then a year after he arrived he died the Baghdad United Nations Headquarters bombing on August 19, 2003.
