Background
While attending UCLA, Bareilles was a member of their a cappella group, Awaken. After graduating from the university's communication studies department, she continued to sing at local clubs like the Hotel Cafe and Genghis Cohen, where she recorded material for her two 2003 demos, The First One and The Summer Sessions.A year after the 2004 release of her first studio album, Careful Confessions, which featured songs like "Undertow," "Red" and early versions of "Gravity" and "City," Bareilles signed with Epic Records.
In July 2007, her album Little Voice was released, shooting to #1 on iTunes. The first single, "Love Song," reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, and a repackaged version of the album hit the Billboard 200 Top 10 the next year.
