• Quilting is the art of sewing two or more layers of fabric together to make a quilt. The major components of a quilt are the top, back, batting, binding and label. Quilt tops and backs can be wholecloth or pieced. Piecing can be done by hand or by machine.

Once the quilt top and back are complete, they are layered together with batting in the middle. The three layers are basted together with pins, then permanently joined by tying, machine stitching or hand stitching. Machine stitching can be done in the ditch or free motion.

Once the layers of the quilt are joined together, the edges are trimmed, a bias binding is sewn to the perimeter and turned and stitched to conceal the raw edges.

A label is made to document the quilt and then stitched to the back side of the quilt.
