• Pope Benedict XVI began his first Papal visit to the United States (and his second visit abroad) on April 15, 2008. The visit was scheduled to coincide with the 200th anniversary of several large dioceses, including those of New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston. It also marks the 200th year since the diocese of Baltimore became the first archdiocese in the United States.

Pope Benedict's schedule is a mix of formal meetings during the days, and informal social meetings in the evenings, including the birthday party of opera tenor Plácido Domingo.

The visit is also intended to help rekindle faith among Catholics in the United States. Pope Benedict is also expected to address the Vatican sex scandals and the negative effects of moral relativism -- the idea that right and wrong are situational rather than fixed and absolute.
