    On November 29, 2008, Burress sustained an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the thigh at an undisclosed New York City club. He turned himself in to New York City police on Monday, December 1, 2008, to face charges of criminal possession of a handgun. He was charged on two felony counts of weapons possession and released on $100,000 bond. The Giants placed Burress on the reserve non-football injury list, effectively ending his season with four games to play.     According to a report filed from the traffic stop, Burress allegedly used expletives during the traffic stop. The officer claimed Burress was "violent and aggressive."     Alise Smith filed suit against Burress in December of 2008 after claiming that he rear-ended her car. Smith sustained back and neck injuries in the accident. Burress' insurance was said to have lapsed three days before the accident occurred.
