• The American pit bull terrier is one of several breeds loosely classified as pit bulls. Although illegal in many countries, states and localities, American pit bull terriers are often used in dog fighting. The breed was originally imported to the United States in the 1800s from England and Ireland with fighting as the main intention.

Many state and local governments require pit bull terriers to be muzzled in public places.
