California's Gay Marriages
On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court, in a 4-3 ruling, ruled that the law banning gay marriage was unconstitutional, paving the way for the legal recognition of such unions in the state. Lyon and Martin had previously married in San Francisco, after Mayor Gavin Newsom began officiating gay unions in 2004. Their marriage was subsequently annulled by the law which the Supreme Court struck down. -
