Martinez has been involved in controversy during his career. Despite being a very accurate pitcher, Martinez has hit a high number of batters, which has resulted in accusations of "head hunting". In 2003, Martinez was involved in an altercation with New York Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer during a playoff game. Benches cleared and Zimmer headed toward Martinez, but Martinez stepped aside and grabbed Zimmer by the head, sending him to the ground. The incident remained a top story throughout the series.
