A round, juicy fruit with fuzzy yellow-orange skin, peaches grow on deciduous Prunus persica trees. Peaches must be picked when ripe since, unlike some other fruits, they will not continue to ripen once removed from the tree. Once picked, peaches do not last long and will bruise easily.
Although they are often thought to be a different species, nectarines are actually peaches with smooth, rather than fuzzy skin, a trait that is caused by a recessive gene.
Peaches are second only to apples as the most commonly cultivated fruit.
