    He previously played linebacker for Penn State University. He earned several honors while in college. He earned Sporting News Big Ten All-Freshman honors in 2003, Second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2004 and First-team All-Big Ten and All-American honors in both 2005 and 2006. Additionally, in 2005 he was given the Dick Butkus Award for the top college football linebacker.

    He was selected in the second round, 34th overall, by the Buffalo Bills in the 2007 NFL Draft.
