...And Justice For All?
Metallica's lead guitarist Kirk Hammett has said that Death Magnetic is similar to the 1988 release ...And Justice For All.YouTube: Kirk Hammett Video InterviewJustice was notable for its almost inaudible bass in the final mix. Some put this down to, amongst other things, band leaders James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich not wanting to "turn up" new bassist Jason Newsted. Metallica's previous bassist, Cliff Burton, was killed in a bus crash in Sweden in 1986.
Hammett stated that new bassist Robert Trujillo had a great influence on the "Death Magnetic" material.UnsungHero.com: Metallica’s ‘Death Magnetic’ (July 15, 2008)

The film was shot between 2001 and 2003 as the band recorded their St Anger album, which disappointed some longtime fans. The film was notable because it showed the constant presence of "performance enhancing coach" Phil Towle. According to Hammett, no "wacky doctors" were present for the recording of Death Magnetic.UnsungHero.com: Metallica’s ‘Death Magnetic’ (July 15, 2008)
