American artist Jeff Koons repurposes kitsch and pop culture imagery into avant-garde paintings and sculptures. After establishing himself as an artist in the 1980s, Koons founded an art factory which employed 30 artists to work on various aspects of his pieces. The factory was reminiscent of the workshops of Andy Warhol and many Renaissance artists. He also employed an image consult to develop his public persona. His work has attracted some controversy, particularly "Made in Heaven," a series of paintings, sculptures and photographs depicting Koons in a variety of sexually explicit positions with his then wife, Ilona Staller. In November, 2007, his piece "Hanging Heart" set an auction record for a living artist, selling for $23.6 million.
