This page is a full text walkthrough for Half-Life 2. Written specifically for the PC version, it also serves as a guide for the console versions as the only difference between them are control layouts.
The plot outline operates on a system of planned encounters and scripted events, so the story will be identical each time you play through. The only difference will be the location of some of the enemies. Note that enemies have additional health and you will lose health quicker on higher difficulty levels.
Once you have successfully completed play of Half-Life 2, we recommend playing the sequels: Half-Life 2 Episode One and Half-Life 2 Episode Two. These take place immediately after the end of Half-Life 2.

Weapons
- Crowbar: This is your only close-combat weapon. It is good for killing Headcrabs, busting crates and boxes and a host of other things. And it never runs out of ammo.
- 9mm Pistol: Your second weapon is a good starter weapon. It kills Civil Protection quickly and is useful for long-range shots before you get the Crossbow. Ammo is plentiful and this will be your backup weapon for most of the game. You can carry up to 243 rounds for this weapon.
- .357 Magnum: This powerhouse pistol has very limited ammunition. You can carry a maximum of 18 rounds for it. However, it will kill any human target in a single shot, from any range. It kills Zombies in two shots and makes an excellent sniper weapon before you get the Crossbow. Always keep a few rounds for it. You never know when you'll need to kill something in a hurry.
- Submachine Gun: This weapon is an H&K MP-7 with a grenade launcher. It's accuracy is fair, it's power relatively weak. However, ammunition is plentiful for it, and it will be your primary weapon for most of the game. Nearly all Combine troops will carry this after it starts appearing. Only use the grenade launcher to take out groups of enemies from medium range. Never use the grenade launcher in close quarters. You can carry 270 rounds for the Submachine gun and 3 rounds for the grenade launcher.
- Overwatch Pulse Rifle: Found later in the game, this weapon serves as a replacement for the Submachine gun. It has excellent power, good rate of fire and can carry 90 rounds. It also has a secondary plasma attack that kills any human target in a single hit and bounces a few times as well. You can only carry 3 plasma rounds.
- Shotgun: This SPAS-12 Shotgun is one of the most useful weapons you will get. It has two firing modes: single and double. The single is perfect for killing Black Headcrabs, humans and Antlions. The double blast will kill just about anything short of a Black Headcrab Carrier in a single barrage. You can carry up to 36 rounds for the Shotgun. Only use it at close range.
- Crossbow: This is your primary sniper weapon. It fires super-heated pieces of rebar and will kill any human target in a single shot. It has excellent range, but can only carry eleven rounds. Secondary-fire is the zoom function.
- Grenades: These are useful for clearing rooms and groups of enemies. They are highly effective and can be set for delayed or quick explosion. You can carry five Grenades.
- RPG: This stands for Rocket-propelled Grenade. These are useful for shooting down Gunships and Striders. Use the laser to guide your rockets. You can carry three RPGs.
- Antlion Bait: After you kill the first Myrmidont, the Vortigaunts gift you with the Antlion Bait. From here on out, the Antlions are your friends. Use the primary function to throw the bait. This causes the Antlions to attack whatever you threw the bait at. Use the secondary function to squeeze the bait. This calls any nearby Antlions to you. The Antlions will be instrumental for your operations in and around Nova Prospekt.
- TIP: The bug bait is useful for more than calling and directing Antlions. Throw it at a Combine soldier. He will begin to flail and will not shoot you for a few seconds. Use this time to hit him with the Crowbar. This is very useful if you are low on ammunition.
- Enhanced Gravity Gun: This is the last weapon you will get. When all your other weapons get destroyed, you are left with only this for the rest of the game. It can do two things.
- It can pull objects AND enemies to you. Pulling an enemy electrocutes and kills them instantaneously. The Enhanced Gravity Gun's power is also much better. It can pull consoles off walls.
- It can blast enemy troops. Again, this is instantly fatal. Blasting one enemy trooper into others will electrocute and kill them all.
Enemies
- Civil Protection: These are the first and easiest enemies you will encounter. They are easily recognized by their white helmets. Two shots to the head from the 9mm Pistol will bring them down. They are easily defeated by any weapon. They carry 9mm pistols and Submachine guns.
- Barnacles: These are the second enemies you will encounter. They are easily recognized by their long tentacles that hang from the ceiling. They are easily avoided and can be killed in two ways.
- Shoot them. Five shots from the 9mm Pistol will kill them.
- Let them snag you. You will have a few seconds while it reels you in. Just before it bites you, hit it with the Crowbar. This saves on ammo, but can be dangerous if your timing is off.
- Manhacks: These are small helicopter-like drones that slice you with their blades. They are easily defeated three ways.
- Shoot them. A few bullets will bring them down.
- Hit them. The Crowbar can destroy them in two to three hits.
- Snag them with the Gravity Gun, then shoot them into anything solid and close by. This will destroy them in a single shot and save you valuable ammo.
- Headcrabs: These critters are small and nimble, but not very dangerous. They are easily killed with any weapon. Try and keep them at a distance. They can leap a few meters, so shoot them quickly.
- Zombies: These creatures are the result of Headcrabs getting a hold of humans. They are best dispatched with Submachine Guns or Shotguns. Aim for the head and make sure the attached Headcrab is dead before you move on.
- Swift Headcrabs: These are faster and more dangerous that regular Headcrabs. They have long legs like the Black Headcrabs, but are colored like normal ones. They do more damage than regular Headcrabs. Kill them as you would regular Headcrabs.
- Black Headcrabs: One of the most dangerous opponents, Black Headcrabs can reduce you to 1 Health with a single hit. They are larger than normal Headcrabs and make a rattling hiss when they are near. Take them down quickly with a burst from your SMG or a shotgun shell.
- Screaming Zombies: These nightmares are fast, loud and extremely dangerous. They can be killed with a burst from the SMG or with one to two shotgun shells. Note that they are easy to hear coming: they often climb the side of buildings and will either make a clanking noise or scream.
- Black Headcrab Carrier: These are humans who have been taken by Black Headcrabs. They are very large and slow but extremely tough. They also like to throw Black Headcrabs at you. Destroy them with explosives and stay well away from them at all times. These are potentially the most dangerous enemies. Thankfully, you never see more than a handful of them.
- Overwatch: These soldiers are tougher than CPs. They also carry heavier firepower. They carry submachine guns, shotguns, magnums and pulse rifles. Defeat them with the shotgun or pulse rifle.
- Overwatch Elite: These are the best Overwatch soldiers. They wear white armor and always carry pulse rifles. They make use of the secondary attack on the pulse rifle as well. Defeat them with the pulse rifle or shotgun.
- Myrmidont: This giant Antlion is very tough and very powerful. Stay well away from it. The trick is to allow it to charge, then sprint out of the way. Hit it with your strongest attacks and explosives.
- Auto Gun: These robot sentries automatically target and shoot you and any Antlions nearby. They can be easily disabled by throwing them with the Gravity Gun or knocking them over with the Crowbar. You can approach them by using a barrel as a shield, then ramming them. They are also used later on in your defense. They can be set up again if they get knocked over.
- TIP: Place Auto Guns near choke points: stairwells, tight hallways and corners.
- Strider: These large, three-legged machines are surprisingly tough and very powerful. They can only be defeated by several (5-8) rockets. Never get near them. Their legs can impale you.
- Security Turrets: These are rare, but dangerous. They are marked with blue laser beams. Breaking the beam calls the turret out of the floor. Drop a grenade inside to destroy it.
- NOTE: Security Turrets have a limited field of fire. Standing behind, to the side or on top of the turret is safe. Use this to your advantage.
- Gunships: These flying machines are easily recognized by the large fan at the aft end. They can be destroyed with three RPG shots. To hit them, wait until they start shooting and aim your RPG launcher away from them. Guide the rocket in behind the Gunship. It will shoot your rocket down if you aim straight for it.
- Helicopter: These monsters can only be defeated by the airboat gun. Shoot them repeatedly to bring them down.
- Armored Truck: Like the helicopter, these can only be defeated by the airboat gun. Spray them with a few solid bursts to blow them up.
