• The New Deal

  Roosevelt won the presidency during the heart of the Great Depression under a platform of immediate relief for the nation's poorest. He instigated The New Deal, a series of policies aimed at stimulating the U.S. economy after the stock market crash of 1929. He was also instrumental in the repeal of Prohibition one month after he was inaugurated.

• Paralysis

  In 1921, Roosevelt became ill and paralyzed from the waist down. Believing the disease to be polio, he co-founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, with the intention of finding a cure. Today, the organization is called the March of Dimes and promotes pre-natal and infant health. A 2003 study concluded that Roosevelt likely had Guillain-Barre syndrome, not polio.
