  • Suspended Bishop

Between August 15, 1977, and January 11, 2005, Fernando Lugo was an ordained, Roman Catholic priest. From 1994 until 2005, he was the bishop of San Pedro, Paraguay. It is illegal for a priest to run for the office of president in Paraguay and as a result Lugo asked to resign from the position when he realized his presidential ambitions. The Vatican suspended his title rather than bestowing an outright laicization.
