Americans voted on November 4, 2008, for Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. The major candidates were Democrat Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois, and Republican John McCain, a senator from Arizona. Much of the election focused on the troubled American economy, engagement in military conflicts with Afghanistan and Iraq and the character of the two candidates.
