• Early Years

  The team was originally founded in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers. They were one of the founding teams in the World Hockey Association. In 1983, the team settled down in Edmonton and were renamed the Edmonton Oilers. • Early NHL Years

  After the 1979 season, the Oilers were absorbed into the NHL when the WHA dissolved. Led by the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers became serious Cup contenders in the 1983 post-season.
