Early Years
The team was originally founded in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers. They were one of the founding teams in the World Hockey Association. In 1983, the team settled down in Edmonton and were renamed the Edmonton Oilers. They continued in the WHA for the next six seasons, making it to the Championship finals in 1979, where they lost to the Winnipeg Jets.Sports Encyclopedia: Edmonton OilersEarly NHL Years
After the 1979 season, the Oilers were absorbed into the NHL when the WHA dissolved. Led by the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers became serious Cup contenders in the 1983 post-season. They won the Western Conference Finals over the Chicago Blackhawks before falling to the New York Islanders in the Stanley Cup Finals.Sports Encyclopedia: Edmonton OilersFive Years, Four Cups
Following their 1983 Cup loss, the Oilers returned stronger in 1984, winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in the history of the franchise. The Oilers would dominate the league over the next four seasons, winning the Championship again in 1985, 1987 and 1988.Sports Encyclopedia: Edmonton OilersGoalies
