  • Croatia's History

    Though an independent entity since first inhabited by Slavs in the 7th century, Croatia fell under the control of the foreign governments of Hungary and Austria. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Croatia engaged in power struggles with the Ottoman Empire, which was continually expanding.

    Croatia was incorporated into Yugoslavia during World War I, then again in World War II after a brief period as an independent state. The Croatian government declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

    A significant population of Croatia are soccer fans, however there are contingencies for tennis and basketball as well.

    Rap music saw a growth in popularity in the 1990s, with The Beat Fleet and The Ugly Leaders having great success out of Zagreb. Much of Croatian rap include lyrics of protest and are heavily influenced by American rap.
