  • Brief Overview

Comoros was a French colony until 1975 when it gained independence. It is located off the coast of Africa near Madagascar and is the third smallest country by size in Africa. By population it is the sixth smallest country; however, it is among the countries with the highest population density.

The country is plagued by frequent coups d'etat and is one of the poorest countries in Africa. As a result, it requires substantial foreign aid for its citizens to survive. Comorans living in other countries send money back to Comoros, which is another source of financial support.
