  • Life and Career

    Brian Cox was born in Dundee, Scotland. His mother was a spinner who suffered from nervous breakdowns and his father was a weaver who died when Cox was nine years old. As a result Cox was primarily raised by his sister and his aunt.

    He joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre when he was fourteen and later went on to receive formal training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduation, he appeared in a number of films, but his big break came in 1986 when he starred as the character of Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann's Man Hunter.

    Following that his next big appearances on screen were in Braveheart (1995), X2 (2003), Troy (2004), and The Bourne Supremacy (2004).

    In 2008 he is set to appear in The Escapist opposite Joseph Fiennes.
