Since the 2001 announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Beijing, China, would be the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics, various groups have called for a boycott of the event, citing consistent human rights violations by China, and China's support for the Burmese government in their crackdown on protestors in Myanmar in the fall of 2007. Calls for a boycott grew in March 2008, when the Chinese military cracked down on anti-government protests in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
