Career
Anton Chekhov, for whom much of childhood was spent in poverty, originally wrote and sold short stories for money while he supported his mother and father and studied to become a doctor. He earned a reputation for his satirical depiction of street-level life in Russia, which brought him to the attention of the most famous Russian writer of the day, Dmitry Grigorovich. Grigorovich advised Chekov to work harder on the literary aspects of his writing and Chekhov heeded the advice. He went on to write hundreds of short stories and more than a dozen plays. He is widely regarded as the father of the modern short story.Notable Works
