About American University
In 1893, American University was established by an act passed by the United States Congress and the vision of Bishop John Fletcher Hurst. It took two decades for the school to have enough financial support to begin classes. The first graduate students were admitted in 1914, and degrees in economics and chemistry were awarded two years later.
